SUMMARY:Forward‑facing sonar in Florida Bay.
DESCRIPTION:Community Engagement Project: Forward-Facing Sonar in Florida Bay\nAs part of his master’s degree in marine biology at the University of Miami, Andrew Jordan is leading a community engagement project through his internship with Florida Bay Forever focused on the growing use of forward-facing sonar in Florida Bay.\nForward-facing sonar is a real-time scanning technology that allows anglers to see and track individual fish with remarkable precision. As its use becomes more widespread, it has sparked important conversations about fish behavior, catch efficiency, and the principle of fair chase—the idea that wildlife should have a reasonable opportunity to evade detection and pursuit.\nThis community engagement project will bring together guides, anglers, scientists, conservation organizations, and other stakeholders to share perspectives and explore how this evolving technology may be affecting Florida Bay and the fisheries that support our community. The goal is not to advocate for a particular position, but to encourage informed, respectful dialogue and better understand the opportunities and challenges surrounding forward-facing sonar.\nCommunity Engagement Event\nNovember 6\n📍 Safe Harbor Angler House\nInterested in participating? Whether you’re a fishing guide, angler, scientist, conservation professional, or simply someone who cares about the future of Florida Bay, we’d love to hear from you. If you’d like to contribute your perspective or learn more about the project, please reach out:\n@forwardfacingsonar_event2026 or https://www.instagram.com/forwardfacingsonar_event2026/\n\n\n Together, we can encourage thoughtful conversations that help protect the future of Florida Bay.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Shark Depredation Town Hall
DESCRIPTION: Florida Keys Community — Your Voice Matters\n\n Be part of the solution — use your voice and share your experience.\nHave you experienced sharks taking fish off the line? Seen changes while diving? Worked on the water as a captain, guide, charter operator, or dive professional?\n\nResearchers from the University of Miami and FIU are coming to the Keys to hear directly from the people who know these waters best.\n\n\n The survey is now live!\n\n\n\nThe flyer QR code and the link below will take you directly to a short, anonymous survey where your experience can help shape real solutions for fishers.\n\n\n\nThis survey will help to better understand the problem of catch loss due to sharks in Miami and the Florida Keys. We are looking for practical solutions that work for fishers. It takes about 12 minutes to complete and your input is incredibly important.\n\n\nJoin us for an evening of conversation, food, and community as we discuss shark depredation in the Florida Keys and how it affects our fisheries, businesses, recreation, and marine ecosystem.\n\n\n\n August 14\n 6:00 PM\n Safe Harbor Angler House\n Free food & snacks\n Cash bar\n\n\n\nThis is an opportunity to share your experiences, ask questions, learn about current research, and help ensure future decisions are informed by the people who know the Florida Keys firsthand.\n\n\n\nPlease share with fellow anglers, captains, guides, divers, dive operators, and anyone with an interest in our marine environment.\n\n\nhttps://umiami.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_2tRL9NIPoTnRTGS…\n\n\n\n
