Florida Bay Forever Joins Roundtable Discussion at Eco Center

by | Dec 7, 2023

The Everglades Foundation recently hosted their regional Roundtable Discussion at the Green Turtle Hammock Nature Preserve. A panel of local stakeholders including business owners and environmental experts were able to address questions and concerns about securing our water supply and ensuring water quality by advancing Everglades restoration projects.

The results of the meeting reaffirmed that after 3 decades of momentum, our efforts have yielded unprecedented state and federal support for Everglades restoration that is already producing benefits to the waterflow in the state of Florida.

Looking ahead, these dedicated funds will guarantee water security, improve water quality, and prevent the devastation from toxic algal blooms, fish kills and seagrass and mangrove degradation.

There was unanimous concern that the water temperatures and water quality have created inhospitable conditions in the Keys that have affected our economy and livelihoods. With record high temperatures already threatening our reefs, potential untreated discharge of waters from Lake Okeechobee covered in 75% toxic algal blooms will bring even greater risks to the Florida Keys and our state as a whole.

Our next steps going forward are to continue our momentum to fund and keep these essential restoration projects on track so that we do not delay the much needed clean water flow southward.
